Sclerotherapy (sclerotization) is an injectable method of varicose veins removal, in which a special substance is applied into the intradermal, subcutaneous, or transfascial vein in the form of liquid or foam, which causes local chemical damage to its inner lining and non-infectious inflammation without producing a thrombus – the vein collapses and it is gradually transformed into soft tissue and absorbed. Currently, the only registered and used substance for sclerotization in the Czech Republic is polidocanol, which is contained in the preparation Aethoxysklerol in different concentrations (0.5-3%).

The method has its precise rules and technology of realization, from the treatment of the microvarices (called microsclerotherapy) to the treatment of main veins. An integral part of sclerotherapy is the compression bandage by elastic compression stocking or set. Compression is necessary to prevent the backflow of blood into the currently sclerotized vein, which could lead to its recanalization (re-opening). The compression period after the procedure depends on the size of the sclerotized vein and on the extent of sclerotherapy. We use solution in the form of liquid for the smallest microvarices, special foam for larger venules and veins (ie. foam or foam sclerotherapy). In case of foam sclerotherapy, the active substance remains longer in the vein, is 2-3x more efficient, and therefore it is possible to use a smaller dose and concentration. In some cases, it is necessary to undergo treatment repeatedly at 2-4 week intervals.
